How it came to be
My writing career started at a very early
age, probably from the first time I learned joined up writing.
In my early years my addiction to writing spiralled out of control.
At school, (from the age of 11-16), I would write the longest
stories in English class. My English teacher always gave me top
marks, but I believe that was because they were far too long for
him to read. He told me then that I should be a writer, but again,
I believe that was because then he wouldn't have to mark my work.
I only ever wrote for myself, (which was lucky, believe me), and
I wrote my first book at the age of 14 whilst on holiday in the
Scottish Highlands with no television and lots of rain, (not exactly
a teenager's idea of heaven). I won't tell you anything about
the book, suffice to say I didn't try to get it published, although
I recently discovered that my mother still has it. I have to be
incredibly nice to her forever.
I abandoned writing as soon as I entered the sixth form. Unfortunately,
although I did English 'A' level, there was no creativity required.
Well there was, but only in relation to other people's stories.
University followed, I studied history at Bristol. Although I
had to write essays for my course, I didn't do anything else,
although I believe I did pen the odd poem every now and again.
(It was the drink).
My writing ambition was finally resurrected when I had left yet
another job, and realised that careers and me weren't exactly
a match made in heaven.
I started to write a novel. Actually I started to write a number
of novels, most which were abandoned on page 4. Then suddenly
I had the idea for Rubber Gloves or Jimmy Choos?
Needing to pay an extortionate London rent, I worked in an investment
bank. Luckily for me, my boss didn't give me too much work to
do, nor did he question me when I was typing my novel in his time.
Eventually as my contract ran out, my novel ended. It was perfecting
timing.
It didn't happen overnight, and I'd be lying if I said it was
an easy road from completion to publishing. But it did happen.
Eventually I got myself an agent, and eventually I got a publishing
deal.
